Student Evensong

posted 30 Mar 2010 04:18 by Timothy L'Estrange

On Palm Sunday our usual Evening Prayer at 6.30pm was student-driven. On the organ stool we had Edward Dean, an organ scholar, and student of the Royal School of Music. His talented playing was an inspiration, much enjoyed by all present. Meanwhile, the office was led and presided over by our resident theological student Ben Thompson, of Oak Hill theological college. The Rector sat in choir, and gave the final blessing.

Although this particular service tends to attract an older congregation, it was refreshing to have the service led by the young folk, and everyone appreciated this peaceful end to a busy day in the life of our church.

The photograph shows theological student Ben Thompson (left) and the Rector (right) at the end of the service, standing in the chancel, with the high altar behind them.

New altar furnishings

posted 23 Mar 2010 08:42 by Timothy L'Estrange

The high altar of our church is looking resplendent. The new purple altar frontal was purchased for the church by subscription, with many different parishioners and church groups contributing towards the cost. The purple frontal is used during the penitential seasons of Advent (before Christmas) and Lent (before Easter).

The new altar candles were donated anonymously; their design is an improvement on the previous ones, and is helping to prevent spillage of wax. Additionally they are bright and shiny, whereas the older ones (which had seen many years of use) had become tarnished and dull.

Finally, another anonymous donor, impressed by the new candles, very kindly gave the church a splendid new altar cross with a 'lamb and flag' emblem at its centre.

We are grateful to all those whose kind donations help to keep our church looking beautiful, to the glory of God.

Church House Working Party

posted 19 Mar 2010 03:58 by Timothy L'Estrange

Thank you to all those who have volunteered to join the Church House working party. Dates are now available.

Working Party 1:
On Saturday 20 March, from 10.30am, please gather at Church House. There will be many tasks, but the main thrust will be rubbing down woodwork and floors, filling gaps with polyfiller, and making preparations. Sanders will be provided, but please bring sandpaper with you if possible! Even if you aren't practical, we will need people just to hold the bottoms of ladders, or to make cups of tea! So everyone is welcome. The work is likely to continue on Sunday afternoon.

Working Party 2:
On Saturday 27 March, from 10.30am, please gather at Church House. There will be many tasks, but the main thrust will be painting walls and beams, polishing the floor, and covering the notice boards. Please bring paint brushes if possible. Again, people will be required simply to hold ladders, and make cups of tea, so there will be jobs for everyone. The work is likely to continue on Sunday afternoon.

British Museum

posted 27 Nov 2009 14:04 by Hugh Turvey   [ updated 19 Mar 2010 03:57 by Timothy L'Estrange ]

A small party visited the British Museum on 12 August 2009 to view St Mary's ancient silver gilt chalices.

The picture shows the two chalices, held for the church by the British Museum for safe keeping; they are usually on public display so that everyone can see them. They are made in gilded sliver. The smaller one is 16th C and the taller one is dated from the early 17th C. They were given to the church at about that time but records have been lost so we don’t know who gave them. They are held there on display and in trust for the church in room 46, if anyone would like to visit. We own a third similar chalice, which is on loan to St Paul's Cathedral Treasury.

The BM have insured them for us as they are very valuable. The small group of church members who visited the BM were able to handle the chalices with gloved hands.
